Stronger Communities, Greener Playgrounds: How Sustainable Design Brings People Together

At Play & Park Structures, we believe playgrounds should be more than places to play — they should inspire healthier lifestyles, stronger communities, and lasting connections. That’s why we’re proud to be part of PlayCore's National Demonstration Site (NDS) Network, a nationwide program that recognizes parks and playgrounds committed to evidence-based design and measurable outcomes.

What is the National Demonstration Site Network?

The NDS Network, established by PlayCore’s Center for Outreach, Research, and Education (CORE), highlights communities that align their projects with best practices in areas such as:

  • Inclusion – ensuring all children, regardless of ability, can play side by side.
  • Physical Activity – creating environments that encourage kids to move more through active playground design.
  • Nature Integration – connecting children and families with the outdoors for both play and wellness.
  • Outdoor Adult Fitness – offering spaces that promote multigenerational activity.

By joining the NDS Network, communities not only implement high-quality play spaces, but also gain recognition and resources that amplify the impact of their investment.

Why It Matters for Communities

When a playground earns the NDS designation, it means it was thoughtfully designed with purpose, not just equipment. Communities benefit through:

  • National Recognition: Sites are added to a searchable map used by families, educators, and decision-makers across the U.S.
  • Research & Reporting: Communities receive data and reports that help demonstrate outcomes, which can be used for future funding and advocacy.
  • Advocacy Tools: NDS sites get access to marketing support and ongoing education to continue driving community impact.

Play & Park Structures' Role

Play & Park Structures partners with communities nationwide to design playgrounds that qualify for NDS designation. From inclusive layouts that bring children of all abilities together to innovative structures that promote active play, our team helps transform parks into living models of best practice.

Our recent work in communities like Elm Street Park in Arroyo Grande, CA and Riverview Park in Chattanooga, TN reflects this mission: building play environments that go beyond equipment and become cornerstones of healthier, more connected communities.
