Budgeting & Playground Cost

Building a new playground requires careful planning and budgeting. While buying playground equipment is a huge part of developing a new play area, it doesn't make up the entire budget. There are other important factors for determining playground cost, such as safety surfacing, installation, freight costs and site amenities. Not sure where to start? We have compiled a list to help walk you through the best ways to budget for a new playground project.

Tune into The Kidd Kraddick Morning Show on your local radio station for updates!

Countless studies have shown that play is critical for physical, social, and cognitive childhood development. Our HEALTHY KIDS INITIATIVE is designed to support the building of new playgrounds or updating existing playgrounds across the country by offering additional funding to expand your budget.

Funding applies to structures only. Product lines include: SuperMax, Duramax, Parallax, Totmax, Boulderscapes, Horizons, and Skyline. Cannot be combined with other offers. Applications must be received by June 30, 2023. Qualified customers will receive a Play & Park Structures voucher valid until September 29, 2023. Orders must be available for immediate shipment. Price does not include tax, freight, surfacing, or installation.

Dr. Grandin is a world-renowned scientist, inventor, author, and advocate for people with autism. Diagnosed with autism as a child, she went on to pursue work in psychology and animal behavior. By using her ability to see the world through “different eyes”, Dr. Grandin has become the world’s most recognized spokesperson and advocate for people on the autistic spectrum and has written several highly regarded books. Additionally, she revolutionized the livestock handling industry and her impact on humane animal treatment makes her a highly sought-after speaker. She is currently a professor in Animal Science at Colorado State University.

Play & Park Structures partners with Dr. Grandin and many other researchers, educators, and experts as we continue to develop playgrounds that serve the needs of children of all abilities.

Why Choose The Temple Trolley?

Our unique swivel carriage system allows the rider to glide, swing, and spin at the same time. This motion combination benefits individuals with autism by providing sensory information through a developmentally appropriate activity on the playground.

Why is Spinning So Important?

Through our collaboration with noted autism expert, Dr. Temple Grandin, we learned that the sensation of spinning can often produce a calming effect for some children and adults with autism. Spinning is a sensory-rich movement that promotes balance, posture, and spatial body awareness which are all essential to human development.

PlayCore’s National Demonstration Site program was conceived to recognize thoughtfully planned outdoor play environments that ensure that people of all ages and abilities can be physically and socially active through play and recreation. Communities that are recognized can create positive attention and attract partners and funding that support this social capital. Additionally, by collaborating with program partners, the successful process can be replicated for others to share.

In light of current health concerns, we are referencing important cleaning guidelines listed below:

Please refer to the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) Reopening Guidance for Cleaning and Disinfecting Public Spaces guidelines to clean and disinfect your playground equipment.

Always clean the surface with soap and low pressure water (ie. using a garden hose, high pressure may damage paint and surfaces) prior to disinfection. Normal routine cleaning with soap and water removes germs and dirt from surfaces, and lowers the risk of spreading COVID-19.

To disinfect most surfaces, the CDC recommends using diluted household bleach solutions, prepared by mixing:

  • 5 tablespoons (1/3 cup) bleach per gallon of water or
  • 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water

Follow manufacturer’s instructions for application, ensuring a contact time of at least 1 minute.

Rinse your playground equipment and let it completely dry before allowing it to be used.

Note: Bleach solutions may damage wood finishes, a disinfecting solution containing 60% to no more than 70% alcohol is recommended.

WARNINGS:

  • Check to ensure all cleaning/disinfectant products are not past their expiration dates. Expired products will not disinfect properly.
  • Check to ensure the product is compatible with the surface it is being applied to.
  • Never mix household bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser as toxic gases may occur.
  • Wear recommended protective gear when applying disinfectant.

Using the above CDC recommended solutions will not harm your playground equipment and your warranty will remain for its duration.

It is also important to promote safe practices that reduce the potential for exposure including posting signs at public gathering spaces highlighting the current CDC guidelines, including:

  • Avoid gathering in groups
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds at a time
  • Avoid touching your face
  • If you’re sick with any ailment, stay home. Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • When in public, maintain physical distancing of at least six feet
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw it away. If you don’t have a tissue, use your elbow
  • Clean your hands with a CDC approved hand sanitizer after touching public equipment

By implementing mindful procedures, we can help stem the spread of COVID-19 together.

Out of 1,000 children between the ages of 3 and 21, approximately 85 will have disabilities, and only one will have a physical disability. The remaining 84 children will have cognitive (41.5), communication (17), social/emotional (11), chronic health impairment (11), multiple disabilities (2), and sensory disabilities (1.5).  Designing a play environment that intentionally addresses the sensory, cognitive, physical, social-emotional, and sensory needs of all children,  provides an embracing recreation space where people of all abilities can play together.

The purpose of PlayCore’s unique inclusive play programs is to provide educational resources for communities that wish to move playgrounds beyond minimum accessibility to create more usable outdoor play environments that recognize everyone’s right to fully participate in equitable play.  Inclusive play environments intentionally address the physical and social inclusion of people of all ages and abilities. PlayCore is proud to partner with leading experts, Utah State University’s Center for Persons with Disabilities, to help communities provide meaningful, healthy play opportunities for everyone.

Investing in active transportation is about building more inclusive communities. Walking and bicycling are the only means of mobility for all children and youth and for many older adults. Even in the wealthiest community, at least one third of the population does not drive. The opportunity to move safely around our communities should not be limited to only those with access to a car.

Planning our cities in a way that encourages people to ride bicycles just makes sense. The emissions created by motorized transportation, and the obesity rate, continues to grow. Bikeable cities and neighborhoods are increasingly seen as essential tools in competing for workers and residents. Biking has many diverse health benefits.  The research is clear, bicycling is a key ingredient to creating sustainable cities that promote healthy lifestyles and economic vitality, and redistributing public space that has been dominated by cars and providing safe and enjoyable places for people to ride bicycles, can help build more inclusive and people-friendly communities.

The Unleashed guidebook educates professionals, individuals, and communities on how they can advocate for off-leash dog parks. The guidebook provides information on the value and benefits of these spaces, the design considerations associated with dog parks, and planning and implementation strategies.

Benefits associated with the creation of dog parks impact dog owners, dogs, and the communities where these parks are located. Dog parks help both pets and owners increase enjoyment for the outdoors, while providing a wealth of additional health and well-being benefits, as well as social and community advancements. To ensure these benefits, a variety of considerations should be taken into account. Unleashed helps identify these considerations, and offers a framework to implementation, including case studies of successful projects.

Added benefits are enjoyed when we take music outside. Nature restores mental functioning in the brain the same way that water and food fuel our bodies. A growing body of research confirms that experiencing music in nature positively engages the brain, builds social cohesion, and creates the conditions to build harmonious communities. Outdoor music spaces engage people of all ages, races, and musical ability to experience and share their creative expressions of tones and rhythms and melodies, and experiencing music in outdoor settings promotes community engagement and greater individual happiness as it relaxes, soothes and feeds the soul.

To help facilitate these benefits, Outdoor Music Parks are being created around the world to bring the benefits of outdoor music to people everywhere. Selecting high-quality, meaningful groupings of instruments is an important part of the process to provide musical integrity, optimize the experience, and give all people, whether they are trained to play or not, a feeling of success when they express themselves through music. Natural Harmony™: An Instrumental Guide to Blending Music and Community provides valuable tools to help create meaningful outdoor music parks, as well as case studies that share examples of communities that have successfully used musical instruments to unite the community.

We have developed a list of potential playground grant opportunities. We have also written an article specifying how to write your grant letter. Below we’ve built out a sample grant request for a playground. It shows how to tell the narrative of your project to improve your chances of receiving the grant. The goal is to show how your project is helping the grantors achieve their organization’s mission.

Executive Summary

Lifelong Friends is a national non-profit focused on helping children build deeper friendships through play and intentional playground design. We have researched-based playground designs that help promote communication and relationship building for children of any age. We are applying for the Tennessee Playground Grant to help fund our community playground in Nashville Tennessee, which will directly benefit the children of Nashville.

We have designed and developed 20 playgrounds in different metropolitan areas across the United States. These playgrounds have been used as researched by behavioral psychologists. We have found that through intentional design children are 45% more likely to interact with other children. This increased rate of interaction is proven to improve social skills and physical exercise.

We would like to use the Tennessee Playground Grant to help construct a playground that will directly benefit the children of Nashville. The playground will host 5,000 children a year and give the East Nashville a public space to exercise, meet new people, and build relationships.

We have designed and developed 20 playgrounds in different metropolitan areas. These playgrounds have shown to improve children’s interactions by 45%. We are applying for the Tennessee Playground Grant to help fund a playground project in East Nashville. This playground will directly benefit the community of East Nashville and host over 5,000 children a year.

Statement of Need

We are fundraising for the East Nashville Playground Project and will utilize the $100,000 grant to help purchase playground equipment and have it installed. This will help cover $30% of our estimated budget of the playground and help create a safe public space for the community.

East Nashville has seen a lot of social and demographic change over the past 30 years. It is home to 30,000 individuals and 5,000 children under the age of 12. Currently, there isn’t a public park or playground within 10 miles of the neighborhood. The East Nashville Playground Project will help construct a local community space intentionally designed to help children build relationships.

Project Description / Plan of Work

Proposed location: 700 Woodland St, Nashville, TN 37206, United States

This location is 7 square acres and in the heart of East Nashville. The site itself is under contract for $120,000 and will need $15,000 of site preparation and grading.

The design below will cover 3 acres of the park. It consists of poured rubber surfacing and a series of equipment all tied together into form one large continuous playground. There are integral shade structures, multiple slides, and climbing pieces. The poured in place surfacing installation will cost $75,000. The proposed pieces of playground equipment are estimated to cost $90,000. The design is below.

Timeline:

Research supports the developmental benefits of playgrounds and free play opportunities at home, school, and the community. Choosing a compliant playground surfacing under and around playground equipment is one of the most important factors in reducing the likelihood of life-threatening head injuries.  The National Program for Playground Safety (NPPS) cites that falls to the surface were a contributing factor in 79% of all playground injuries.

The purpose of the Strong Foundations Playground Surfacing Guide is to provide an educational overview and to raise awareness about some considerations for planning, purchasing, and protecting safety surfacing.

Providing an inclusive playground for children of all abilities to play together is an important step in promoting play, healthy physical activity, and learning for all children. Outdoor play experiences can provide the perfect opportunity to support inclusive play by creating awareness, breaking down barriers, and fostering friendships.

2Play Togethersm strives to make a difference in inclusive playground play and creating communities that care through playground activities that promote character education. The 2Play Together program equips programmers with tips and activities that will promote meaningful play, understanding, and fun between children with and without disabilities.

The activities featured in the 2Play Together activity guide were created by the National Lekotek Center and field-tested during outdoor playground events held at universally designed playgrounds with children with and without disabilities in grades PreK-5.

Why is Maintenance Important??

Protect your investment:  Play equipment, protective playground surfacing, planning, and site development of a playground are significant investments. It simply makes good economic sense to maintain the equipment to extend its life and protect your school or agency’s investment.

Manage risk:  Proper, routine, and timely maintenance is a way of managing risks in the community’s play areas, helping to protect them from costly accidents, and demonstrating the community’s standard of care.

Improve children’s play experiences: When playground equipment is broken or otherwise unusable, children miss opportunities for play. That moment of connection with others and fun-filled learning might be lost. The better maintained the equipment, the better the chance that a child’s life is improved. Your work could make a difference!

Promote community values: Maintained and groomed play environments are a source of pride for the community. Taking good care of the playground equipment and maintaining a beautiful environment is an expression of your community’s values.

Control expenses:  Timely, preventive routine maintenance procedures help control expenses by reducing upkeep and replacement costs, enabling more accurate playground budgeting.

The primary job of a playground supervisor is to be concerned about the safety and welfare of the children that are in your care. How you choose to do your job may impact not only their safety but the value of their play. Through play, children grow and develop valuable skills that will carry them into the adult world. The work of a playground supervisor is to enhance play opportunities and restrict behaviors that prevent children from productive, safer play experiences. Supervisors should familiarize themselves with their school or agency’s playground related policies, be trained in first aid, and participate in ongoing learning about best practices for playground supervision.

Play & Park Structures is pleased to offer this very important overview to raise awareness about some considerations for a routine playground supervision program.  This guide is provided as a courtesy to all playground purchasers to help identify the importance of the value of play and playground supervision.

                                  Deep Kettle Drum

The Deep Kettle Drum produces two deep, resonating sounds. A deep bass sound can be achieved by striking the drum in the middle and an open sound is achieved by striking the drum closer to the edge.

                                Drum Line

Drums are percussion instruments that can be tapped with fingers, or struck with an open hand. Children can create a steady beat by tapping Drum Line with their hands, drumming with their fingertips, or banging with cupped hands.

                            Tuba Talk

The Tuba Talk creates a loud powerful sound on the playground. Children can talk, sing or hum into the smaller opening and listen to their voice as it is amplified to make music.

                               Whistle

The clear, rich sound of a whistle echoes across the playground. A short push & pull creates a quick sharp sound, while a full extension of the plunger creates a sound that is deeper and richer in tone and resonates longer.

                              Rain Wheel

The Rain Wheel can be either turned or shaken, creating a sound that imitates rain. Children can also tap the wheel to make a more controlled sound or create percussive rhythms.

                             Rattle & Ring

This unique combination of bells and scraper creates the perfect variety of sounds. Each bell has its own distinct pitch and the scraper creates a raspy tone when the raised grooves are scraped.

Receiving Process:

You can be confident that the quality of Play & Park Structures products and the service you will receive from our representatives and staff will make your playground purchasing experience a great one! We ask that you designate a specific person or persons who will be responsible for facilitating delivery, unloading, and storing your equipment when it arrives at your site. Be prepared to receive your shipment by following these simple steps:

  1. 1

    Facilitate Delivery

Designate a clear path to the site for the delivery truck. If you are not immediately installing the equipment, determine a dry and secure storage site with sufficient space to protect your investment. You will need to arrange for a forklift with extended forks to be on-site at the time of delivery. If a forklift is not available, arrange for 4-5 people to unload the equipment and transport it to storage.

  2. 2

    Receiving the Shipment

Compare the packing slip with the containers shipped to verify the address and purchase order numbers are correct. Make sure the proper number of pieces have arrived. Crosscheck each container label against the Bill of Lading provided by the shipping company to ensure that you have received the number of items noted on the shipping document. Crated and uncrated items that are labeled count towards the total number of items.

  3. 3

    Survey for Damage

Inspect and make detailed notes of any detectable damage to the equipment. Sign for the delivery once all shortages or damages have been clearly noted. Survey for damage. If there are any issues or shortages, contact your Play & Park Structures representative to file a claim.

  4. 4

    Unload and Store

Unload the crate using a forklift. If you do not have a forklift, open the container and unload the parts from the crate individually. Gather all paperwork and save for reference.

Do not forget to ask about playground surfacing and installation when speaking with your local representative - they will be able to offer a turn-key solution, by installing both the playground equipment and surfacing. Once your appropriate paperwork has been completed, your local representative will work with our full time order entry team to ensure your order will be completed promptly. Standard lead time for a Play & Park Structures order is 28 days.

Play & Park Structures’ expansive variety of play components offers many benefits to children’s health by building upper body strength, lower body strength, cardiovascular, core, and overall stability and balance.  Regardless of the size of the structure, our designs will address these critical benefits on your system.

With so many options, the design process can sometimes become overwhelming; keep these simple guidelines in mind when deciding what play components are best for your project:

  • Age groups that will use the playground
  • Size of the planned recreation space
  • Child capacity
  • Activities type preferences (fitness-based, more slides, climbers, etc.)

Custom Playground Design

Play & Park has its own CAD (Computer-Aided-Design) Team who is qualified and certified in National Playground Safety Inspection (NPSI).  The CAD team reviews your area, product interests, and safety standards to design a one-of-a kind playground structure. We work hand-in-hand to get the best design possible for your space, children’s ages, and the activities that you require.

The CAD Team has also been trained in designing ADA accessible structures.  Every element of design is thoughtfully considered, down to the simple idea of playground flow and what’s fun on the structure. It’s an added advantage to have your structure designed by these experts.

Steps To Designing A Playground

1. Choose Your Playground Goals

Are you wanting to design an inclusive playground or one that replicates natural play? Are you wanting to develop an outdoor fitness park or include pieces of equipment for adults along with children? These questions are necessary to ask when designing a playground because each decision you make will take you one step closer to meeting those goals.

2. Choose Playground Surfacing

There are a few unique types of playground surfacing that all provide adequate safety surfacing for children. They each have their unique benefits along with installation costs and longterm maintenance costs. Our friends at Totturf created a playground surfacing comparison article that details the benefits and costs of each style of playground surfacing. The thing to keep in mind when choosing playground surfacing is the critical fall height. It is the necessary depth of safety surfacing to protect children from the max attainable fall from your playground equipment.

3. Choose Your Playground Equipment

This is the fun part! Playground equipment is the entire reason children play in your park and we love designing and building new sets of playground structures. As a general rule, we suggest choosing playground equipment that will engage children from 0-5 along with older children from 5-12. We have also developed entire groups of inclusive playground equipment to engage children of all abilities!

There are tax benefits with flexible financing payments - payments may be fully deductible
Flexible financing permits 100% financing with no down payment, allowing for quicker equipment acquisition without a major cash outlay
When financing, long, flexible terms can be arranged with low monthly payments
Flexible financing lets you put your equipment to use immediately to generate revenues - with minimum budgetary impact
Flexible financing conserves valuable company working capital and preserves bank credit lines
Flexible financing payments are fixed, not adjustable - eliminating worry about floating interest rates

Play Equipment

In large part, your budget will be determined by the number of children using the playground at a given time.  To understand how much a playground could cost, a general rule is to budget for about $1000 per child. So, if you expect 50 kids to use the play area, you should budget for about $50,000.  The playground development costs should then be compared to the project budget. If development costs exceed the budget, it is almost always better to devise a plan to phase in the project over a period of several years rather than reducing the scope of the playground.

Safety Surfacing

This portion of the budget will cover preparation of the site and installation of safety surfacing (such as engineered wood fiber or shredded rubber). The type of surfacing material may have a tremendous impact on the cost of the playground over its life cycle.  Some surfacing types —  like engineered wood fiber — require simple and minimal yearly maintenance. Others may require little to no maintenance, such as rubberized surfacing options. Yearly maintenance for surfacing may be as simple as refreshing and spreading the supply of wood fiber under the structure to revitalize the effectiveness of the surfacing attenuation.

Installation

Installation is another expense to plan for when creating a budget for your new playground. Installation of a playground includes: basic site preparation, playground installation, and surfacing installation.  One factor that has an impact on the cost of installation is the site itself. Sometimes the location of your playground will need to be cleared of subsurface rock. Depending on your local/regional landscape, it is typically a good idea to plan for these costs.

Freight Costs

Freight costs will vary depending on the Play & Park Structures products being ordered and the shipping location in proximity to our manufacturing facility in Fort Payne, AL. Contact your consultant to get an accurate freight estimate for your project’s budget.

Site Amenities

It should be noted that site amenities are important but can be costly additions to the playground project. Important site amenities to consider include trash receptacles, benches, tables, grills, and bicycle racks.
